Definition of "Pastel"

     * In all cases, the pastellist applying pastel sticks on a base may be a sheet of coarse-grained paper, cardboard, canvas, velvet (or a cardboard coated with a velvety texture), or a plank of wood. The rods are friable and leave pigments on the surface, clinging to its pores. The instability of pastel pastellist allows the spread of pastel pigments on the media to mix colors or create effects melted.

The possibility of pastel are very rich. The pastellist can use its sticks of different ways:

* Use singing for specific traits;
* Use of the tranche for the work surfaces;
* Use of pastel crushed to spread on the media and produce a zone of blurred color.

A pressure controlled and these three techniques allows a wealth of features and textures, but the real strength of pastel is certainly purity and vibration of its colors.

The pastellist can both use pure colors (application simple sticks), the mixture of colors by merger (the pastellist color spreads on the other) and optical mixing (pastellist superimposes traits color).

The instability of pastel implies a conservation technique because a particular non-pastel set degrades the slightest touch. It is therefore necessary to determine the works when they finish or store them flat, face painted against a sheet of paper crystal.

The pastel allows direct contact between the color pigments and support because it does not require a binder-type liquid oil. The texture of support is very important because it directly determines the final appearance of the work. The use pastellistes therefore preferably paper grain for the effects of texture. The latter also has the advantage of being less saturate quickly.

The color of support is also important in the composition because the media is often very visible once the work completed. It is common for a pastellist choose a complementary color paper on it to make it out.
